As to the more than half a billion years last period of the history of Earth (Phanerozoic), the greatest change known today in the history of biota took place at the turn of the Palaeozoic and Mesozoic, that is at the boundary of the Permian and Triassic. There are very few areas in the world, where the Permian/Triassic boundary can be observed in a continuous marine sequence, providing opportunity for finding traces of this outstandingly important global geohistoric event. In Hungary, continuous marine Permian/Triassic boundary sections are known in the Bükk Mts. as well as in some boreholes of the Transdanubian Range. The aim of our research programme is – making use of the favourable conditions offered by the Hungarian sections – to summarise the results of the research works carried out so far and complete them with new, modern and appropriate investigations, to get a picture of the exact course of the changes at the boundary of the Palaeozoic and Mesozoic, as well as to make an attempt on this basis to reveal the reasons. Taking into account that similar investigations are in progress in the Hungarian Triassic/Jurassic boundary sections, representing the end of Triassic events, comparative analysis of the two processes, examined by similar methods, is also planned.
