The survey of genetically modified foods on the Hungarian market, with method development and adaptation
ABSTRACT
The investigation of the present situation (status) in the Hungarian market would give the information about the presence and quantity of genetically modified components in foods getting onto the tables of consumers. There were only a few similar surveys performed even in the EU.
This survey also might serve as the background of the activities of the authorities and give a basis for information of the consumers.
As a result of our project of applied biotechnological research and development the reliable laboratory background would be realized with the required sensitive and exact methods for the detection and quantification of genetically modified components in foods.
In this project we have also planned to reach an accreditated status of the laboratory for the official control of genetically modified foods.
In our project we have planned to investigate foods containing soy, maize, tomato and potato.
The steps of the project includes:
developing and optimising methods for the extraction of DNS from different kinds of foods;
developing and optimising PCR based methods to investigate different food samples;
performing the qualitative and quantitative GMO tests.
It is an important part of the study to estimate the risks of the consumers concerning GM foods based on the evaluation of the data of the results.
