5th RTD Framework Programme

Success stories - IST

IST (Information Society Technologies)

Project details

Project reference: IST-1999-11908
Acronym: PLAY2
Title: SW for: storage of various music input, conversion of different Braille syntax into sound, graphic, Braille output and telematics access
Subject Index: Information Processing, Information Systems; Medicine, Health; Social Aspects
Objectives: Objective: PLAY2 is an extension of PLAY (under DGXIII - Telematics Applications Programme), which was completed in 1999.

PLAY developed: the PLAYcode, to manage and file Braille music in compliance with Braille rules and syntax, as stated in the International Manual by the World Blind Union; the Braille Music Editor (BME), to write and convert music in PLAYcode; to convert from and to codes such as Enigma (Finale), MIDI, NIFF; and an OCR prototype for raised Braille.

PLAY2 aims at: starting some web sites with electronic library and search system; acquiring new Braille Music Code pieces, by translating Braille texts and transcribing 20th century ones (little is available in Braille), in compliance with copyright rules; advertising the project and providing blind musicians with a free new BME editor for the entire project duration; activating and managing the service and regularly informing all people involved about the project progress; Braille Music Code advertising and dissemination activities; and monitoring any sites and initiatives using PLAY2.

Objectives:
PLAY2 is aimed at offering blind people an easy approach to the IT world, by offering the opportunity of exchanging information with sighted users. PC tools are meant to solve several problems met by the blind. An easy system to compose music Braille scores, by converting them from most codes used by such commercial programs as Coda Music's Finale is provided. Exchanging scores converted in Braille Music Code among blind users is another remarkable opportunity; PLAY2 also can successfully meet the needs of blind musicians, who are complaining that Braille scores are not very available in libraries, and too long is taken to get texts, because they can be distributed as raised hard copies and by conventional mail only. IT can drastically help reduce the high costs of scores, especially when drafting has to be commissioned, and start a service for exchanging music texts among libraries to users.

Work description:
PLAY2 was generated from the needs of the users showing a great interest in PLAY. PLAY2 will enable them to organise their own virtual libraries, so as to receive more and more texts, to collaborate and exchange scores with sighted musicians. The whole PLAY2 activity will enable the institutes and libraries participating in the project to collect more and more material. These institutions will continue to collaborate in the initiative, even after the project completion.
