5th RTD Framework Programme
Success stories - IST
IST (Information Society Technologies)
Project details
Project reference: | IST-1999-20801 |
Acronym: | EDIBOLD-SCS |
Title: | Electronic Data Interchange For Batch Operations Logistics & Design - Supply Chain System |
Subject Index: | Economic Aspects; Information Processing, Information Systems; Innovation, Technology Transfer; Telecommunications |
Objectives: | Objective: Our overall objective is to demonstrate, through a Best Practise Action Project, how the E-commerce combined with the use of a straightforward scheduling tool, (dedicated to controlling and forecasting the whole production process - including customers and suppliers) allows the SME's to build or to join "dedicated business networks", to permanently improve their competitive advantages in order to survive. SMEs are joining production partnerships, the so-called "dedicated business networks", in the concept of "virtual enterprise". This project dedicated to SMEs is proposed by SMEs. We will combine the two -separately existing and marketed (and hereafter described) products/technologies, which stem from two previous ESPRIT projects and which have been developed specifically for the SMEs- in a unique software solution that we will call WEBEDI+BOLD.
We expect to reach:
1. A processing time reduction between 25-35% in the production process
2. A stock reduction as a consequence
3. A reduction of costs and efforts associated to scheduling and administrative activities
4. An increase of the percentage of due delivery time to customer and of their satisfaction and as a consequence increase of the profitability between 5-10% of manufacturers and their suppliers; Reinforcement of the "business network feeling".
Work description:
The expected work will be implemented through the following steps:
1. The production process will be assessed in each of the 4 manufacturers in order to create the reference point against which the results of the best practise action will be measured. A complete model of measurement in each of them is validated. Clients/manufacturers/suppliers relationships will be defined and sorted into 4 categories (see chapter B6); persons in charge, means used and technical and commercial data's will be identified (volume and type of clients processed per day, per person, difference between actual and forecasted production/delivery,
2. An automated methodological approach, which leads to integrate the flow of information between manufacturing SMEs with customer/supplier orders, will be validated. And a software solution, which integrates WEB-EDI standards/software with BOLD software, will be technically prepared.
3. The low cost PC based software solution WEBEDI+BOLD will be provided and implemented on a the 4, selected manufacturers associated to some related suppliers, who will be selected because of their knowledge in the use of Internet.
4. The results of the improvements vis-a-vis the previous manual/semi-manual methods will be measured and reported. The WEBEDI+BOLD solution will thus be validated.
5. An adequate training programme -taking into account reported weak points- to improve staff expertise in each of the selected manufacturers is implemented.
6. A European dissemination programme will be prepared with the previous results and implemented by the dissemination members of the consortium.
Milestones:
Through this Best practise, it is expected to reach the following Business objectives in each of the manufacturers:
1. processing time reduction between 25-35% in the production process
2. stock reduction as a consequence
3. reduction of costs and efforts associated to scheduling and administrative activities
4. increase of the percentage of due delivery time to customer and of their satisfaction
5. and as a consequence increase of the profitability between 5-10% of manufacturers and their suppliers; Reinforcement of the "business network feeling". |
